Willig's (The Garden Intrigue) latest title focuses on Miss Gwen, the Pink Carnation's chaperone and partner in espionage. They travel to Bath looking into the disappearance of two schoolgirls, one of whom is the Pink Carnation's little sister. Col. William Reid (who briefly appeared in The Betrayal of the Blood Lily) arrives from India expecting to see his daughter and finds that she is missing. While the three follow clues, William realizes his inadequacy as a father, and Gwen and the Pink Carnation's relationship unravels. However, the missing girls lead them (and a dangerous French agent) to the lost jewels of Berar and to new possibilities for the future. Kate Reading's adept interpretations of Willig's characters continue to be engaging and enjoyable. The Pink Carnation is a model of quiet restraint, with her words spoken in low tones and a measured pace. Gwen's impulsive and combative personality is highlighted with energy and sharpened accenting.
VERDICT This charming production is recommended for popular collections. ["Fans can rejoice in finding the outstanding features they've come to count on: intriguing historical details, double-crossing deceptions, complex characters, and plenty of romance. Readers will be pleased to discover a more mature couple featured within the historical portion of the story…and the continued progression of our beloved contemporary couple," read the starred review of the NAL trade pb, LJ 7/13.]
