Connor (Cicadas Sing of Summer Graves), a pen name for writing duo Robyn Barrow and Alexandra Cronin, pens a story with gothic folklore overtones and magical realism. Lil Clearwater is strongly bonded to the pecan farm where she grew up in small-town Arkansas. The pecan harvest season should be a great time of year. However, it is also heartbreaking for her because her family is all gone and many local farmers are selling their land. Lil is unwilling to cave in and sell the family farm, but the arrival of her twin sister Sasha stirs things up. Lil stayed on the farm while Sasha ran away to explore her life. Lil doesn’t want to deal with this reunion at harvest time, but the sisters must work together to fight the forces that would take their land. In this story about coming to terms with the past and trying to make a future, Connor mixes fantastical with thriller elements that will have readers wanting to know what happens next.
VERDICT This novel is a good match for book clubs (with questions included at the book’s end) and a must for thrill seekers and fans of Southern gothic stories.
