The Perfect Escape

Unreliable narrators abound in Konen’s (All the Broken People) sometimes-confusing thriller. Three women—Diana Holbein, Sam Lochman, and Margaret Cahill—have been friends for about a year, bound by the fact that they’re all in the middle of divorce; they call themselves the Lonely Hearts Club Band and meet weekly for drinks and emotional support. When Diana suggests a weekend getaway upstate, the others agree. Once they’re on the road, car trouble strands them in the small town where Sam’s ex-husband happens to live. They must stay the night, during which Sam spends time with her beloved Harry, Margaret meets an attractive younger man, and Diana disappears—then someone is murdered. Some of these many plot twists are improbable and may frustrate listeners. Erin Deward, Karissa Vacker, and Kelsey Navarro voice Diana, Sam, and Margaret. It’s sometimes hard to discern which of the protagonists is speaking, but the narrators do a good job of portraying the characters’ confusion and anxiety.
