Most of the Book of Proverbs is attributed to King Solomon; however, one chapter in particular comes from another source. Consisting of 33 verses in all, chapter 30 of Proverbs was written by Agur, an obscure author mentioned nowhere else in the Bible. Having very little information about the person Agur, Payleitner (
What If God Wrote Your To-Do List??) relies heavily on his biblical knowledge and analytical skills to argue for this ancient chapter’s lasting relevance. Payleitner organizes his book into short chapters, most of which begin with pertinent scriptural passages, followed by commentaries. Although Payleitner recognizes value throughout the 30th chapter of Proverbs, he places emphasis on Agur’s prayer, recorded in verses seven to nine. He believes that Agur’s prayer reflects an attitude that people today should adopt, thus finding their “sweet spot” with God. To make this book especially meaningful, the author has included questions for personal reflection.
