A small enclave of Western immigrants provides services like scuba training, yoga instruction, and bartending to tourists on Thailand’s remote island of Koh Sang. Each of these “permanents”—a sexual predator, a murderer, and a parole violator, among others who have come to Koh Sang to escape their pasts—has something to hide. Dive instructor Cass has just become engaged to ex-bartender Logan when an internet influencer named Brooke arrives with malicious intentions. She makes friends with Cass and worms her way into the group. Authorities have ruled a recent tourist death an accident, but when two more deaths occur, it’s clear that something else is going on. As Brooke tries to unravel the island’s secrets, the permanents work to stop her. When the secrets and cover-ups are revealed, it is clear nobody is innocent. Joe Jameson and Pema Monaghan narrate the novel’s secondary characters, while primary narrators Miranda Raison and Dakota Blue Richards alternate the viewpoints of Cass and Brooke. While they provide skillful performances, their voices are similar enough that listeners may struggle to distinguish between them.
VERDICT Ochs’s twisty debut thriller will keep listeners guessing to the end.
