Celia Fairchild is better known by the pen name she uses for her widely popular advice column, “Dear Calpurnia.” While Celia reigns supreme in doling out advice, her personal life has not fared as well. She suffered a number of losses as a child, is recently divorced in her late 30s, and longs to be a mother. Celia’s career in New York changes abruptly, just as she learns that she has inherited her aunt’s spacious home in Charleston, SC. The house that Celia remembers with fondness is now a disaster, requiring a complete makeover. In a whirlwind six months, Celia and some newfound friends renovate the home. As the house undergoes its transformation, Celia experiences her own personal renovation.
VERDICT This feel-good novel from Bostwick (Hope on the Inside) oozes charm. Celia’s story is believable, and the characters from this Southern town are as refreshing as sweet tea on a hot afternoon. It’s the perfect recipe for a good read
