A nameless woman, recently widowed at age 50 and an indifferent mother to an adult daughter, encounters a twin of herself at a makeup counter. The twin, Vita, sets the woman on a quest of discovery about shamanism and the world, aided by gods of Egyptian myth, Isis and Osiris (the latter she indulges in a love affair); Vincent Van Gogh; some tabby cats; and her dead parents. As the woman journeys further, she becomes an archetype of Deborah from the biblical Book of Judges, taking on the role of warrior, priestess, and judge. As Deborah, she learns about Earth and its history from the Lost, 100 people (Isis and Osiris included) who were the “test people” when Earth was created. Do the creatures of Earth have enough ability to learn to be nonviolent yet still artistically creative so our planet can be saved? Only Deborah can judge.
VERDICT With its mishmash of Freudian theory, Egyptian mythology, self-assured characters, and meandering plot, this book is mostly for fans of New Age fiction.
