In 2003, Drew was hired as the head basketball coach at Baylor University, a Christian school in Waco, Texas, as the team was coming off a scandal involving the murder of one player by another, and a cover-up by the coaches of unacceptable practices. His first years as coach were spent under Baylor’s NCAA sanctions, but 18 years later, he had led the team to an NCAA championship. Or rather, as he would say, God brought Drew and his team, players, coaches, family and fans, to the championship. This is the story of a basketball team that went from tragedy to triumph, with highs and lows along the way, including the strange season that resulted from the COVID pandemic. Drew, a devout Christian, emphasizes that his is a story of the role Jesus played in his life and the lives of his players and coaches; he hopes that others will be brought to Christ through reading about how following the principles of J.O.Y. (Jesus; Others; Yourself) can bring them to Jesus.
VERDICT While Drew’s story will certainly appeal to Christian readers, basketball aficionados will enjoy the story of a basketball team redeemed.
