Freelance blogger Sora Reid’s lackluster relationship history involves exes who are liars and losers. After sending her editor an article about going boyfriend-free for Valentine’s Day, she receives a monthlong project to stay single. Not long into the assignment, Sora serendipitously reconnects with childhood friend Jack Mann, a muscular baker at the local grocery store. Jack always had a crush on Sora but never said so in elementary school. As the #GoSolo articles take off, Sora finds herself choosing between a potential full-time job and a burgeoning romance. Cindy Kay narrates biracial Japanese American and Scottish Sora as a spunky procrastinator who has ambitions but does not want to bring attention to herself. Narrator Michael Braun’s multiracial Jack is straightforward yet easygoing. While he is the more serious of the two, Jack’s inner voice becomes adorkable anytime he thinks of Sora. The two have a good-natured chemistry. Despite the narrators’ strong performances, listeners may become frustrated by the story as it steers into farcical territory shortly after the halfway mark.
VERDICT A solidly narrated, if somewhat exasperating, romance from Tanamachi (Her Hawaiian Homecoming, as Cara Lockwood). Recommended for Christina Lauren and Jasmine Guillory fans, but an otherwise optional purchase.
