Chamberlain's (
Necessary Lies) novel is a multilayered story of self-discovery and redefinition. Riley McPherson returns to her childhood home after her father's death and finds her whole life has been a series of deceptions. Her older sister Lisa committed suicide years before—or did she? Evidence seems to point to Lisa being alive and living under an assumed name. The author skillfully uses the minor characters to pull the story along with further deceptions and harsh truths. Revelations are well paced, and ultimately the story poses moral questions for Riley, Lisa, their brother Danny, and the others Riley must deal with as her house reveals its secrets. Susan Bennett reads the two sisters' separate tales with bold honesty.
VERDICT Highly recommended for fiction and mystery collections. ["Chamberlain's powerful story is a page-turner to the very end. A must for all mystery lovers and those who like reading about family struggles," read the review of the St. Martin's hc, LJ 91/14.]
