Corbett’s (“Frank Yakabuski” series;
Mission Road) series starter takes readers to the Maine woods, rife with illegal drugs and human trafficking disguised as legitimate logging. One operation is run with an iron hand by Beau LaFontaine. He makes a deal with a forest products company run by Tucker and Travis Lee to launder the money he makes, enlisting the support of the local banker as well. Alerted by a suspicious wire transfer, the FBI shows up, with undercover cop Danny Barrett as part of the investigating team. Posing as a tree marker, Danny infiltrates the logging company, but when the Lees’ banker is executed by an unknown gunman, the investigation unravels with frightening speed. Corbett creates an exciting and tragic story, building compelling characters and examining the intricacies of human relationships. Narrators Adam Gold and Catherine Ho deliver the story with intensity and pathos.
VERDICT Readers of crime fiction will enjoy this book. A great next-read for fans of Paul Doiron, C.J. Box, and Nevada Barr.
