The grand scale of Bennett’s (
Locklands) first entry in the “Shadow of the Leviathan” series reveals a corrupt empire beset by titanic creatures, distilled down to a murder mystery. However, much like the plant that bursts through the murder victim, the investigation twines through the fantasy backdrop, breaking the world open for listeners. While the investigation takes center stage, an understanding of the world’s magical intricacies is necessary to crack the case. Somewhat disappointingly, narrator Andrew Fallaize chooses voices that are more theatrical than realistic. Intensely gruff-sounding military men, Moira Rose–tinged high-class foolable women, and sharp disdain characterize much of the cast, making it immediately apparent to listeners just who these characters represent in a classic mystery. Even Din, assistant to the brilliant investigator Ana Dolabra, is voiced with a plodding, brow-furrowed tone that solidifies his inexperience and status as the story’s Watson. The Sherlockian mystery and epic fantasy elements have equally high appeal, ensuring eagerness for the next installment from both genre lovers.
VERDICT Though the performance isn’t as subtle as the clues, this lengthy audiobook entertains.
