A standout debut open-door romance featuring Ember Lee Cardinal, a light-skinned Chickasaw woman who is trying to break into the corporate accounting world and decides to lie about her ethnicity in order to get a job after repeatedly being rejected in the past. Full of drama and humor, this utterly charming, relatable, relevant, and swoony workplace love story has Ember falling for Danuwoa Colson, the quiet IT guy at work who happens to also be of Indigenous heritage. As Ember’s lies keep building, she struggles to balance tolerating her racist boss and hiding her budding office affair while acting with integrity and not disappointing both herself and those she loves. Choctaw narrator Siena East does a great job voicing the cast of characters in this hilarious but heartfelt debut with all the passion and authenticity readers could hope for.
VERDICT A much-needed and welcome addition to contemporary romance library collections, which have had a decided lack of Indigenous-authored stories until now.
