The Unconquered City

Illi Basbowen knows loss. After the dead rose in Ghadid, her parents and many other relatives and friends were lost to the fight. Seven years later, Illi is still trying to keep her city safe, as guul continue and increase their attacks. Illi also assists the reclusive and terse en-mabari Heru Sametket in a search for solutions, plus keeps her skills honed as one of the untried assassin cousins of Ghadid. Meeting the caravan guard Canthem has improved Illi’s skills, in more ways than one, as they make Illi feel more than she wants. When a figure from Heru’s past appears and brings hidden truths to light, Illi weighs whether the secrets are worth the sacrifices that may need to be made. She also confronts her own nightmares and stubbornness to protect the people and city she cares about, and face down the seemingly immortal sajaami.
