Fans of the movie Elf will get a smile from the names of the recipes in this book and their inspiration, such as the snack “Son of a Nut-Crackle.” Each page is whimsical, from its display of gumdrops on recipe pages to the narwhal on the cover. Though it contains no actual promotional material from the movie (hence “unofficial” in the title), its inspiration is easily recognizable. Arranged by meal, such as breakfast, lunch, and drinks, many of the book’s recipes have a significant amount of sugar content as is often promoted by Buddy the Elf during the movie food scenes, although there are also a few savory options. The author is conscious of the younger audience who loves Elf and provides mocktail versions of the drinks. One of the book’s best features is the readily available ingredients for most and the use of ingredients that can be deployed in multiple recipes instead of just one.
VERDICT A sugar-filled smorgasbord that feels like Buddy wrote it himself. The recipes will bring out one’s inner child with all the fun combinations from Taylor (The Unofficial Home Alone Cookbook).
