Lady Elisabeth Hamilton-Baythes is a spinster with a secret that she has kept since she was 15, when she was abducted by highwaymen and sold to a brothel. She was saved by a young lord but has never truly gotten over the experience. She has devoted her life to her charity, which rescues young women from a similar fate. Bryson Courtland, Viscount Rainsleigh, has become one of the richest noblemen in Britain while trying to make up for his parents' past deeds. He has worked hard to shape his life into that of the perfect aristocrat, but to complete his ideal life he needs the ideal wife. After one encounter with Elisabeth, he knows she is meant to be his. She defends him and his choices in front of their peers when no one has ever stood up for him before. What Bryson doesn't realize is that Lady Elisabeth is the same girl he rescued when forced to go to a brothel by his father. He never learned her name and doesn't immediately recognize her. Elisabeth on the other hand has known of him for years and has secretly watched over his life.
VERDICT The second book in Michaels's series (after The Earl Next Door) will be a breath of fresh air for historical romance readers. Both protagonists are in their 30s and have never married. Elisabeth is independent and works hard to make her charity a success; she is not waiting for a husband to fulfill her life. Bryson is not the typical wastrel or overindulged gentleman. Entertaining and engaging from beginning to end.
