When two meddling matrons wager a string of pearls against a proposal, Gabriel finds himself inadvertently engaged to Marie, a wallflower more aptly described as a wall weed. In an attempt to free him from the results of her betting blunder, Gabriel’s grandmother encourages Marie to make her fortune another way, by writing her scandalous memoirs. Gabriel finds the stories shameful rather than salacious and forbids the publication. Under his grandmother’s unusual and unapologetic influence, however, Marie has begun to blossom, giving him a more formidable foe than he expected.
