This manuscript by Schwartz (1916–95)—author (
The Mental Hospital, with Alfred Stanton), therapist, sociology professor (Brandeis Univ.), and subject of Mitch Albom’s best seller
Tuesdays with Morrie—was discovered by the author’s son, journalist Rob Schwartz. This book displays more of Morrie’s practices and insights concerning aging. Morrie discusses various topics of aging, including loneliness and creatively accomplishing goals later in life. He cites examples from others, such as an 81-year-old man who graduated from high school, and from his own life, including health issues that didn’t stop him from traveling. Other topics include exploring nature, awakening one’s senses, and problems and issues with relationships. Morrie encourages readers to live to the fullest.
VERDICT Great for public libraries and not limited to a particular age group. People of almost any generation can benefit from reading this guide to embracing life.
