Seeking refuge on the Pacific Crest Trail after revelations about his marriage come to light, Josh Mallory is running from memories, both old and new. His trip takes an ominous turn when he encounters the body of another hiker, who seems to have fallen to his death. In the nearest town, residents have no desire to deal with the body, and the many missing-hiker flyers posted around the burg raise Josh’s suspicions. He tries to leave quickly but is caught overnight in a mountain pass where danger comes alive. Alex Knox narrates Josh as he reckons with the betrayals of his wife, the actions that haunt him, and the monsters that chase him through the night. As the story progresses and Josh finds himself in increasingly desperate situations, Knox quickens the pace, making for a heart-pounding listen. Not only is this a gory, nausea-inducing listen, but it is perfectly drawn psychological horror as well.
VERDICT With plenty of nods to horror master Stephen King, this is an audio that fans of the grotesque should relish.
