Pondside retirement home resident Robert Kallman has ALS. He and a twentysomething kitchen worker named Foster Kresowik create The World of Pondside, a virtual reality game based on the community that allows residents to relive memorable moments from their past or make new ones. One day, Robert is found drowned, strapped into his wheelchair, at the bottom of the pond. No one knows, or at least isn’t telling, if it’s suicide or murder. When their favorite game stops working, the motley crew of residents of the home set out to discover what happened. Stefaniak (The Cailiffs of Baghdad, Georgia) has created a world full of quirky characters where nothing is as it seems. Readers meet several residents and employees of Pondside, voiced by George Newbern. He excels at creating different voices for a wide variety of personalities.
VERDICT Avid readers of mysteries won’t necessarily be shocked by the numerous twists and turns, including the big reveal. While not an essential purchase, this audiobook is perfect for mystery listeners who like a fun story with lots of odd suspects.
