Ryia Cautella is not used to having friends, especially as she has been known as the Butcher of Carrowwick. Yet her disparate crew, even through betrayals and hidden agendas, have become just that. But now all are scattered through the five kingdoms after their spectacular heist ended in failure and trickery. Meanwhile, the crime lord Callum Clem holds a powerful artifact that can control the magical Adepts from afar, and he is willing to kill anyone in his path to taking control. Ryia knows that she must gather her crew together to stop Clem, but they’ll have to overcome their differences long enough to defeat both the known and unknown powers at play. The relationships between various characters show the fault lines of their personal desires versus what is good for all, creating strong character emotional arcs. Readers may find some character machinations superficial, but Kuhn creates believable tension and actions. The fast pace keeps the plot moving, and high stakes action is almost constant.
