Kuhn’s second “Tales of Thamorr” book (after
Among Thieves) is an engaging fantasy suspense about relationships, choice, and loyalty, with a dash of romance. In the first book, Ryia Cautella and her gang thought they had stolen and destroyed the powerful Quill of Declan Day, an object allowing the holder to control magical Adepts. But then Ryia discovers that their heist was a failure, as they had only stolen a replica quill. The villain Callum Clem has taken possession of the real quill; with it, he can control all of Thamorr. Ryia is determined to wrest the quill from Callum, but first she must reunite her scattered crew, a ragtag group that must overcome fraught relationships and past hurts if they are to succeed. Narrator Zoe Mills provides distinctive voices for the various characters and captures their points of view as they navigate jailbreaks, betrayals, unexpected twists, and ever-present danger. Mills’s masterly delivery of the characters’ sharp quips and witty repartee adds spice to this already engaging tale.
VERDICT A satisfying fantasy that will appeal to fans of Leigh Bardugo and V.E. Schwab. Kuhn’s swashbuckling, scrappy underdogs captivate and entertain.
