This book is really three books: a travelogue, spiritual journey, and a textile history. Textile artist Rinchen-Wongmo traveled from California to Northern India and lived among Tibetan exiles for four years in order to learn the art of silk thangkas, also known as Tibetan appliqué. Her spiritual journey includes learning about basic Buddhist history and philosophy, as well as Tibetan history and culture. She was taught and shares the technical aspects of making silk thangkas and how the thangkas are intertwined with Tibetan spiritual practices and beliefs. The author also includes a portfolio of some of her creative thangka projects, although many of the images and illustrations were not available at the time of this review.
VERDICT Readers interested in Tibetan culture and Buddhist spiritual practices will find this book of interest.
