Like his famous creation, James Bond, Fleming was quite the globetrotter. In 1959, he was commissioned by London's
Sunday Times to explore 14 of the world's most exciting cities. Those writing are gathered here in a collection filled with what are, by today's standards, rather politically incorrect opinions of the 14 locales, including Hong Kong, Macao, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Monte Carlo. Barnaby Edwards's reading of this relatively short production is splendid. His delivery, pacing, enunciation, and inflection are close to perfect. Fleming's prose is excellent, but his opinions will not appeal to a number of contemporary readers.
VERDICT Fans of midcentury travel writing may be interested.
