Prior to World War II, John Robie was a successful jewel thief known as Le Chat. When he was finally caught, he was jailed until the Germans invaded France and let the prisoners go. Robie, along with others, then joined the Resistance. Now, in 1951, he’s enjoying a quiet life as a French farmer until he sees in the newspaper that there’s copycat cat burglar stealing jewelry along the French Riviera and imitating everything about Robie’s style of thievery. The police think Le Chat has returned and are hunting for him, so Robie flees, knowing his only hope is to uncover the person masquerading as him. With the help of a friend who deals in stolen property, Robie goes undercover as a gone-to-seed middle-aged man with money to waste in the casinos of Cannes—the perfect place to find a jewel thief who targets the wealthy. But two young women spell trouble for Robie’s plans.
VERDICT Dodge’s 1952 novel, the basis for the Alfred Hitchcock film starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly, gets a Library of Congress Crime Classics reissue, with a new introduction and notes by Edgar Award winner Klinger (editor of The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes).
