Harms’s (
Hell Crafter) latest, the 30th installment in the multiauthored “Rewind or Die” series, is an extreme blitz of body horror, serving as a frightening metaphor for trans people who find medical care lacking. Isa, a trans woman, has finally saved enough money to afford gender-affirming surgery, but her father’s sudden need for financial assistance leaves her unable to afford the operation. Then she meets Dr. Skurm, a strange doctor who offers Isa a nonsurgical alternative if she becomes a test subject for his body-transforming methods. The results seem too good to be true, and Skurm’s science twists Isa into a nightmare that hardly seems human. Narrator Arden Hughes captures Isa’s joy and horror as her body changes and she discovers the true purpose of Skurm’s research. While the ending might stretch the audience’s suspension of disbelief beyond its breaking point, Harms’s off-the-rails depictions of bodily changes are as out there as anything in films like
Re-Animator.
VERDICT A queer body horror tale with a deep emotional center, speaking to the determination of one woman who will risk anything to be whole.
