Best-selling romance novelist Truly Livingston despises prickly divorce attorney Colin McCory when they first meet to cohost a dating podcast. Soon, however, her boiling anger simmers into something more tantalizing than she could have ever imagined. Seasoned performer Lauren Sweet narrates, capturing the characters’ growing attraction despite their rocky start. At first, the narration is theatrical, and the delivery feels abrasive. Still, as the passion begins to heat up, a softer edge to Sweet’s voice ripples through the main characters’ dialogue, allowing listeners to fully immerse themselves in the couple’s smoldering relationship. The characters’ sexual chemistry is balanced by tender moments. Both Truly and Colin are bisexual, and they lovingly support each other’s queerness. Although the added family dynamics and side plots border on cliché (including Truly’s attempts to trick her parents into falling in love again), Colin and Truly’s relationship is original, fresh, and dynamic.
VERDICT Lambda Literary Award winner Bellefleur (The Fiancée Farce) is a genius when it comes to contemporary queer romances. Her newest novel, full of delicious thrills and steamy intimacy, is a delight.
