The History Channel's popular series UFO Hunters first aired from 2008 to 2009. Each of its three seasons will now belatedly get an official companion volume, perhaps to drum up interest in further television shows. Birnes (Aliens in America) was a host of the series as well as a consulting producer. In each chapter here he chronicles the phenomenon behind an episode in the first season of the series and includes some additional behind-the-scenes information. Birnes is by now a well-known UFOlogist, but he is not an objective observer of the phenomenon. He is a true believer in almost all UFO lore. Most of the TV episodes—and thus most of this book—examine famous old UFO sightings that have been covered in dozens of other books and documentaries. There is nothing new here, either from a scientific standpoint or from the believer's angle, and no updates from the research for the series several years ago.
VERDICT UFO believers and die-hard fans of the series may consider this a must-read. Perhaps some enthusiasts will want to read it while watching the DVDs. May be popular in public libraries.
