Rosemary and Aaron Harker, Huntsmen who protect the world from the Uncanny in the early 20th century, are concerned that the omissions from their last report have been noticed, and their lack of recent assigned hunts supports their theory. When tasked to investigate a situation near Boston for one of the Huntsmen’s wealthy benefactors, their concerns about being tested grow. If they fail, they could lose their work, along with their supernatural Hound, Botheration. But the simple case of a person in perpetual sleep grows more difficult, as further attacks seem unrelated. The siblings must find answers to their increasing questions, including Aaron and Bother’s concerns about why it seems a fey is following them. Both siblings provide their points of view in a time period of gender and socioeconomic divides, which highlights the Harkers’ support and concerns for each other. Underlying tension from the subplots of their parents’ tragic outcomes and the threat of the fey provide hints for future action.
