McAvoy’s follow-up to
Aphrodite and the Duke follows Duke Evander Eagleton’s younger sister, Lady Verity. The sequel runs partially concurrently with the first novel. While Evander and Aphrodite have their romance during the London season, Verity finds a love of her own with Theodore Darrington, a handsome and talented doctor. But Theodore is also the illegitimate son of a nobleman, and as such, Verity could not marry him without causing a scandal. The couple realizes their feelings for each other almost immediately, but they must overcome many hurdles to be together. Like the first book, this is a multicultural historical romance, but rather than racism, the classism of Regency England drives the plot. The audio is narrated by Abe Jarman, Anthony Mark Barrow, and Grace Gray, with Jarman providing Theodore’s point of view, Barrow covering Evander, and Gray narrating Verity’s and Aphrodite’s chapters. The narrators provide engaging and nuanced performances, but listeners may need to adjust between chapters, as the narrators don’t always voice the characters in the same manner.
VERDICT A historical romance full of misunderstandings and mutual pining. Series fans will likely enjoy the sequel, and new listeners may want to explore the first book too.
