Turnbull’s follow-up to
No Gods, No Monsters raises the stakes in a world that now recognizes the presence of monsters. After the monster massacre in Boston three years earlier, monsters must now face the consequences of having been forced out of the shadows. One such consequence is the rise of the Black Hand, a human organization that seeks to destroy monsters wherever they hide. As their numbers increase, a human–monster war is becoming increasingly more likely. While well-meaning monsters and their human companions struggle to find their place in this new world, others hope to escalate the conflict. Turnbull’s second installment in “The Convergence Saga” does what any great fantasy sequel does; it explores the mythology of its world, where monsters are a metaphor for the marginalized, reveals more of the series-spanning threat, and dives into characters’ lives without losing the main plot. Narrating these lives is Cal (energetically voiced by Dion Graham), an omniscient traveler and supporting character who is clearly becoming emotionally involved.
VERDICT Perhaps the most striking part of Turnbull’s novel is its relevance to the current political climate, making it the perfect choice for listeners who enjoy speculative fiction that bravely tackles real-world issues.
