Following her award-winning memoir
Trove, Miller’s debut thriller captivatingly dissects Dr. Gregory Weber’s past. Gregory appears to have everything anyone could ever want—a beautiful family (wife Liv and their teenage children); a flourishing career as a clinical psychologist; and a lovely home in Cambridge, MA. None of this would have been possible had secrets from his past been exposed, and more importantly, he never could have survived his father’s judgment. Now his marriage is strained, if not over, his children are distant, and his father, who has dementia, is living in a nursing home. Then Mira, a new, unexpected patient, walks into Gregory’s office one Wednesday at one o’clock. She quickly takes over their subsequent sessions and seems to know uncomfortable facts about her psychologist’s past. As Gregory struggles for control, he wonders, is he the therapist or the patient? Narrator Steven Jay Cohen’s smooth vocals evoke empathy for this flawed but human hero and will likely have listeners fervently hoping that he can overcome his past misdeeds.
VERDICT A terrific novel, partly a psychological thriller but also a story of the mistakes people make and the possibilities for forgiveness and redemption.
