Ruby Heartwood is a drifter. Living the life of a runaway orphan–turned–traveling psychic, Ruby has only ever been close to her daughter Sabine, her child conceived from the rape that led to her second escape. But when she arrives in Harmony Falls at the beginning of summer fair season, she’s drawn to the Hitchhiker, an abandoned dog who quickly becomes her familiar. Soon the lifelong mystery of Ruby’s history begins to tug on her to solve it. With the support of friends, it may finally be time for Ruby to find love, a home, and her mother. At first, alternating between Ruby’s and Hitch’s points of view is a bit off-putting, but as Ruby and her relationship with the dog develops, the two narratives coalesce.
VERDICT This is a good book for getting out of a COVID reading slump. With genuine character development, it’s perfect for fans of young adult books who are hungering for a parallel adult narrative.
