Activist Nunn, as codirector of Legal Services for Prisoners with Children and cofounder of All of Us or None, has helped implement many initiatives that have impacted individuals and families nationwide. Growing up in a redlined area of one of the richest counties in the state of California, he saw firsthand the disparities between opportunities for Black people vs. white. But it wasn’t until he was incarcerated that his political consciousness began to awaken. His memoir, written with the help of former journalist Lee Romney, is a shattering, deeply personal and brilliant description of his traumatic experiences and lifelong journey to address them, his thought process, and the collective action that brought forth national initiatives such as Ban the Box in job and housing, voting and jury participation rights for people with previous criminal histories and felony convictions, and the end to indefinite solitary confinement.
VERDICT A must have for readers interested in the consequences and transformation of mass incarceration, mass supervision, and inhumane policies and practices.
