Former Google executive and futuristic evangelist Pferdt has written an inspirational book about how to claim one’s own future. He acknowledges that his view of the future is exciting and an opportunity to use one’s imagination and creativity while others view it as frightening and uncertain. He believes that having a future-ready mindset is the way people can overcome obstacles and shape their own future. He outlines, explains, and provides examples and exercises using six key dimensions of the future-ready concept. There is a chapter dedicated to each key dimension: radical optimism, unreserved openness, compulsive curiosity, perpetual experimentation, expansive empathy, and dimension X. Pferdt respects the expertise of others and includes information about fellow Google colleagues as well as testimonials within each chapter.
VERDICT This guidebook is mainly for technology and other professionals who have creative license to develop their own future-ready mindset. He does not discuss the impacts of trauma, racism, poverty, violence, and other issues that may prevent people from taking control of their future. As varied as his contributors are, they all had resources, safety, options, and resources to recover from any mistakes.
