In this collaboration, pastors McCleneghan (Ministry with Families, Union Church, Hinsdale, IL) and Jackson (Faith Presbyterian Church, Greensboro, NC) aim to equip parents with “tools to think critically about what you believe” and “to develop language and practices that communicate your values to your kids.” The book accomplishes this by allowing experts to cover topics in the following areas: bodies and souls, families and relationships, loss, fear and courage, faith, and money and economics. Each essay explores major themes within the topic, suggestions for the conversation, and a listing of further resources. Most contributors are Mainline Protestant although a few are Catholic, Muslim, Jewish, and Society of Friends (Quakers). The anthology format allows readers to focus on small portions of any given topic needed, read straight through, and revisit sections as needed. Practical tips within each chapter are a bonus.
VERDICT Similar in tone and content to Molly Phinney Baskette and Ellen O’Donnell’s Bless This Mess, this modern, progressive guide to integrating faith with tough topics will be appreciated by parents and those working with children.
