Sheriff Solomon Lancaster knows he’s not prepared to investigate a murder in Crooked Creek, IN. He admits he’s an elected politician, not a cop. All he knows about cases he learned from
Perry Mason and
Murder, She Wrote. He does know how to console survivors though, because he’s also the priest at the local Catholic church. He’ll have a chance to practice both his investigating and consoling skills, as one victim after another is found with flowers attached to their bodies. After the second murder, the mayor calls in the FBI. After the fourth one, Solomon is pushed aside, relegated to observer status as the FBI agents and media take over the small town of 2,000. Solomon’s wry narration adds humor to the story, as the sheriff tries to hide his own secrets from investigators.
VERDICT What appears to be a humorous story set in Indiana farm country becomes a thriller with multiple shocking twists. Fans of TV’s Dexter might want to try this disquieting book from Scott, author of “The Ables” series.
