Thirty-five years ago, a student was murdered at private Wakefield College, and the crime is still unsolved. Now the earthquake-damaged English department building is set for demolition, and a time capsule created about the same time as the murder is going to be opened. The plan is to redistribute the items inside to the students who were their original owners. Yet when police detective John Troyer reads the note that his late father had placed in the capsule identifying a friend he'd seen running from the murder scene, the fledgling relationship springing up between Troy and alumni relations director Madison Laclaire takes an unexpected turn: the student Troy's dad saw was Madison's father.
