Moore (
Battle of the Linguist Mages) offers a novel for the acrobatic listener, someone willing to experience taut action and seemingly random story elements that may fundamentally change their understanding of the world. Moore’s wild and whimsical plot features magic and the multiverse—traversed by elevator—and a love of television. Narrator Suzy Jackson is by turns perky and pleasantly droll as she voices the many characters involved in the whirlwind of a narrative. Listeners will likely appreciate the energy she brings to her performance, as the pacing tends to ping-pong between Michael Bay blockbuster and Doctor Who Wikipedia entry, full of edits and tangents and minute explanations of how each twist ties into a larger one. The over 16-hour length of the audiobook could be daunting, but the sections of lengthy exposition act as the closing credits of a television episode, giving listeners a convenient place to pause before diving back into the action.
VERDICT Though listeners may occasionally need to take a breather from this thrilling roller-coaster ride of a novel, this audio adventure should appeal to fans of John Scalzi’s The Kaiju Preservation Society.
