The best sommeliers understand their customers; guiding them and putting them at ease to ensure an enjoyable experience. Much as he would do in his restaurant, sommelier Sohm, wine director of Le Bernardin and a partner in the eponymous Aldo Sohm Wine Bar, treats readers as if he were standing at their table: warmly, directly, helpfully. This book, cowritten by Muhlke, a contributing editor at Bon Appétit, lives up to its name, covering several topics (types of grapes, wine regions, appropriate glassware, food pairings) with just enough depth to assist without overwhelming readers. The result is a breezy but not shallow book, with an abundance of sidebars and other notes that add detail. Sohm’s winning personality shines throughout. Even advanced wine drinkers will enjoy tangents, such as his take on wines with bad reputations. Droll line-drawings add to the appeal.
VERDICT A terrific guide for dipping into or reading start to finish. Highly recommended where books on wine are popular.
