Workforce Education: A New Roadmap

Preparing larger numbers of people for stable jobs and careers that can withstand economic unrest has been a long-standing need and its importance has been amplified by skyrocketing unemployment rates. This book explores the circumstances that created inequalities in the current employment situation and defines a path that could lead to better outcomes for job seekers, employers, and the economy. Authors Bonvillian (political science, MIT; Advanced Manufacturing: The New American Innovation Policies) and Sarma (mechanical engineering, MIT) devote the first half of the book to a discussion of the social and economic challenges that are interwoven with the kind of jobs available and with the education and training that enables people to obtain those jobs. In the second half they outline a new way of approaching education and training—including content, delivery systems, and models showing early signs of success—that could be part of a solution to those challenges.
