What do you get when you have two old friends with over 50 years of experience interviewing stars? Longtime TV critics Bawden and Miller's Conversations with Classic Film Stars: Interviews from Hollywood's Golden Era (2016). This second installment in a series of the authors' collected interviews span from the Great Stone Face Buster Keaton to the Million Dollar Mermaid Esther Williams. The book's format is very similar to that of the previous volume, with a setting of the scene, the interview, and a brief afterword. But what sets this title apart from the first book is the focus on leading men and ladies, horror stars, and disciplined character actors who learn from the film stars at the end of their careers, as most were working in television at the time. It is obvious that Miller and Bawden enjoy their subject matter and have had many great experiences with Hollywood royalty, making this book a breezy, delightful read.
VERDICT Readers interested in film studies, film history, particularly the golden age of Hollywood will benefit from seeing it through the eyes of those who have seen it all.
