Friends since grade school, Saskia, Dominica, Tansy, Lauren, and Farah reunite to celebrate Farah’s upcoming wedding. Tansy, the owner of a vegan café, is also preparing for her whirlwind wedding to a man she hardly knows. Saskia is now married to a wealthy man; Dominica is a successful divorce lawyer; and Lauren, who works at a makeup company, pines over her ex. They all come together for Farah’s bachelorette/wellness weekend, but conviviality turns to horror when the soon-to-be bride is poisoned and dies. Now that they are all suspects, the bond of their friendship is tested. The only thing that really makes them friends is a secretive event that happened 20 years prior. Former stand-up comedian and YA author Weston’s (
Murder on a School Night) adult debut is a sardonic, over-the-top look at the ins and outs of friendship. Helen Reuben narrates the cattiness, backhanded compliments, and outrageous scenarios well, providing several laugh-out-loud moments and perfectly capturing the book’s dry wit. Murder mystery and cozy mystery listeners will love this unique spin on a classic genre.
VERDICT Hilarious, bloody good fun.
