Cortens (Working With Archangels) is a spiritual teacher who practices the art of channeling angels' messages. She believes each individual has a guardian angel who is willing to help achieve personal and spiritual goals if one simply connects with this guardian. In each chapter she helps readers deal with a specific problem, e.g., letting go of anger or dealing with bad experiences, by performing a meditative exercise. The author's former students contribute descriptions of how these exercises helped them and how readers, progressing through the book and performing the exercises, will connect with their own angels. Once they are connected, Cortens explains, they will feel more fully realized and be better able to enjoy their lives.
VERDICT Cortens is sincere in her beliefs. Her writing can be less than engaging, however, heavy with mythology and references to the Bible. Her book is best for hardcore New Age practitioners. Casual readers may find themselves overwhelmed by the amount of information and the time commitment needed to perform all the exercises.
