Joy Bivins is the new Associate Director of Collections and Research Services at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Maureen Sullivan is the Interim State Librarian at the Connecticut State Library, Chad Helton was named director of the Hennepin County Library system, and more library people news.

Joy Bivins head shotNew York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture has named Joy Bivins, previously Chief Curator of the International African American Museum (IAAM), as Associate Director of Collections and Research Services.

Maureen Sullivan has been selected as the Interim State Librarian at the Connecticut State Library. Sullivan has held positions in library management at the University of Maryland and Yale University, served as Interim Dean of Simmons College’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science, is a Past President of the American Library Association, the Association of College and Research Libraries, and the Library Leadership and Management Association, and served as an Advisor to the Aspen Institute’s program Rising to the Challenge: Re-Envisioning Public Libraries.

Chad Helton head shotChad Helton, most recently Director of Branch Library Services at the Los Angeles Public Library, was named director of the Hennepin County Library system, MN, in May. Helton replaces Interim Director Janet Mills.

Meaghan Alston, previously the Prints and Photograph Librarian at the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center at Howard University, Washington, DC, has been appointed Project Archivist in the Wilson Special Collections Library, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Libraries.

California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, announced the appointment of Cynthia Jackson-Elmoore, currently Dean of the Honors College at Michigan State University, East Lansing, as its new Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, effective August 1.

The trustees of the Kansas City Public Library, MO appointed University of Missouri–Kansas City Dean John Herron as the library’s new Director, effective in early July. Herron succeeds R. Crosby Kemper III, who currently serves as Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

Jonathan Karp has been named president and CEO of Simon & Schuster, succeeding Carolyn Reidy, who died from a heart attack on May 12. Karp joined the firm in June 2010 as Publisher of Simon & Schuster’s flagship imprint, and was promoted to President and Publisher of Simon & Schuster Adult Publishing in 2018.

Nichelle M. Hayes, Leader of the Indianapolis Public Library’s Center for Black Literature & Culture at Central Library, has been awarded the Achievement in Arts & Entertainment Award by the Indianapolis Center for Leadership Development.

Amber Lannon, who has served as Interim University Librarian at Carleton University, Ottawa, Ont., since January 1, has been appointed University Librarian.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, NC, has appointed Caitlin Moen as Chief Customer Officer/Library Director as of June 1; Moen joined the library in July 2018 as the Circulation and Access Leader.

Leslie Sharp, Associate Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Faculty Development at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta,, has been named Dean of the Georgia Tech Library, effective July 1.

IN MEMORIAM

Michael Cogswell, who developed Louis Armstrong’s memorabilia into a scholarly archive and transformed the trumpeter’s two-bedroom brick house in Queens into a popular museum, died on April 20 in Manhattan, at age 66.

Robb Forman Dew, Writer of fiction, memoirs, essays, criticism, and cookbooks and winner of the 1981 American Book Award for a first novel, died on May 22 at age 73.

Connie Galmeijer, who served for 27 years as a Library Technical Assistant in the East Asia Collection at the University of Maryland’s McKeldin Library in College Park, died of complications from the coronavirus on May 5 at age 92.
