First recognized in 1968 as a weeklong commemoration, Hispanic Heritage Month was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover the period from September 15 to October 15. This monthlong observance marks the achievements, histories, and cultures of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America, including those from Indigenous and Afro-Latino communities.
