Through the Evil Days: A Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne Mystery by Julia Spencer-Fleming (Minotaur: St. Martin's)
Appeared on the November 2013 LibraryReads list
“Reverend Clare Fergusson and Police Chief Russ VanAlstyne’s honeymoon retreat to the Adirondacks is interrupted by a brutal winter storm and a complicated police investigation involving a kidnapping, a drug ring and the murder of federal agents. Spencer-Fleming’s suspenseful and engrossing procedural introduces a fun, new character (Oscar the German Shepherd) and ends with a signature cliffhanger.”—Leslie DeLooze, Richmond Memorial Library, Batavia, NY
Say Nothing by Brad Parks (Dutton; LJ starred review)
Appeared on the March 2017 LibraryReads list
“Fans of crime fiction and fans of domestic drama will find much to love in Parks’ genre-blending thriller. Judge Scott Sampson is a devoted family man and a respected jurist thrown into every parent’s worst nightmare: his 6-year-old twins are kidnapped, and the kidnappers blackmail Scott into increasingly immoral legal decisions. Cue marital meltdown, ethical dilemmas, paranoia, and a thrill ride that suspense lovers will race through to learn what happens next. It’s a departure from the author’s lightly snarky Carter Ross series, but a welcome one for readers of Harlan Coben and Gregg Hurwitz.” —Donna Matturri, Pickertington Public Library, Pickerington, OH
Dead Soon Enough: A Juniper Song Mystery by Steph Cha (Minotaur: St. Martin's)
In her third outing after Beware Beware, the intrepid Juniper Song gets drawn into the disappearance of a young activist woman involved in a battle over a proposed Armenian genocide memorial. Juniper's client is a female doctor named Rubina, whose younger cousin, Lusig, is acting as her gestational surrogate. Rubina worries that Lusig's search for her missing friend will take a toll on her pregnancy. Cha takes full advantage of the multicultural Los Angeles setting to introduce a melting pot of Korean, Armenian, Hispanic, and Filipina characters. The mystery has just enough twists and turns and red herrings to keep the reader enthralled until the final reveal, which doesn't disappoint. VERDICT In her private detective, Cha has created a worthy modern entrant into classic L.A. noir fiction. An excellent choice for fans of Sue Grafton—Song shares many traits with Grafton's Kinsey Millhone, including doggedness, earnestness, and pragmatism. —Amy Watts, University of Georgia Library, Athens, reviewed in LJ on Aug 01, 2015; selected by the LibraryReads Advisory Board.
