These libraries give us a glimpse into the future of academic libraries across campuses large and small. The Landmarks, named by a team of 6 expert judges from a national pool, represent forward-thinking libraries that provide data-driven research environments, spaces for a breadth of scholarly activities to take place, and building that beat in time to campus life. In this webcast, take a deep dive into one library's process by learning from the architects, librarians, and vendors who renovated the Charles E. Shain Library at Connecticut College into a stunning beacon at the heart of campus. W. Lee Hisle and Chris Penniman join us from the Shain Library, along with representatives from Schwartz/Silver Architects and Demco to take an in-depth look at the design decisions, constraints and opportunities that formed the final result of the Shain Library. The speakers will explore how creativity can emerge from careful planning, consideration, thrift, and a strong sense of preservation—what makes this library a prime example of our landmarks for this round as buildings resilient and deeply meaningful to the community they serve.
