The Lunachicks, a second-wave punk/metal/pop band, active from 1988 to 2000, tell their story in a series of first-person accounts by the band members: model/dancer–turned–vocalist Theo Kogan; once-troubled bassist Sydney “Squid” Silver; introspective lead guitarist Gina Volpe; and guitarist Sindi Benezra Valsamis, four years older than the other members. With journalist Fury, the fiercely independent Lunachicks discuss their early years in Brooklyn; parental neglect; teenage rebellion; the critical importance of New York City; musical influences such as Iggy Pop, the Ramones, and Blondie; their first gig at the legendary club CBGB; and their first record, which Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore helped jump-start. The Lunachicks unabashedly delve into drug addiction, depression, and the recruitment of experienced drummer Becky Wreck and her replacement, Chip English. They also describe their increasing musical sophistication; their tours of Europe, Japan, and Australia, as well as the Warped Tour (1999 and 2000); and their gradual break-up. VERDICT The Lunachicks collectively offer a refreshing, brutally honest look at the hassles, sexism, pressure, and sisterhood of the rock-and-roll life.
