Former Denver City Librarian Rick Ashton, who retired after 20 years at the helm last year, has been appointed chief operating officer of the Urban Libraries Council (ULC), which includes 157 North America metropolitan public library systems and related library consultants and suppliers. In this new ULC position Ashton will direct and manage the ULC's day-to-day operations and work with staff on research, programs, and publications. "Rick is an important addition to our team as we continue to position libraries as essential players in the urban landscape," said ULC President Martín Gómez. Ashton led Denver Public Library through a period of strong growth, including a new central library and adoption of new technology, but in recent years faced a shrinking city library budget and a need to find new funding sources. He previously directed the Allen County Public Library, IN.
